Rebuilding My Van Engine

Starting from scratch:
The motor in our van needs at least half of it rebuilt and yet the cost of fixing it is nearly $1500 to fix, unless I am willing to fix it myself for ($100) which is the parts only involved. According to the instructions, a GM dealer can do the job in about 6-8 hours but if you haven't preformed this task before then expect up to 18 hours to get the job done. The point is, why pay $1500 for a job that could possibly cost $100? Just because a person doesn't know how to complete a task, doesn't mean they can't learn how it's done. I currently work for a Computer Consulting company, working as a computer administrator for tons of local businesses that can't afford the typical IT guy. When there is a problem, they call us and we come and fix it. Problem is, some of the issues are simple tasks the end user could fix themselves, but choose not too because the business can cover the costs and have a professional (us) come in and fix it for them. Simply for me, I'll go on a call to plug in a monitor or the surge protector is turned off. These are simple tasks the end user "refused" to check and then call us to fix it. Not only was it a waste of my time since I do have more important things to handle, but they complain about being charged "95.00" for a service call and refuse to pay the bill. Is this our fault for their stupidity? Where can you draw the line?
